Rooted In Nature Color Block Silhouette Cards

Hi Stamping Friends!

I love the versatility of tree-themed stamp sets like Rooted In Nature!  Not only are they perfect for fall and masculine cards in general, they also work for a wide range of occasions: birthday, sympathy, thanks, thinking of you and get well.

Today, I'm sharing two simple & stunning cards that could work for any of those occasions depending on the sentiment. We'll be creating this card at the "Last Thursdays" class coming on the rescheduled day of Wednesday, August 29.  More details on that class below!

Rooted In Nature Color Block - two cool

Rooted In Nature Color Block Silhouette Cards

I love the cool tree silhouette in the Rooted In Nature stamp set.  It allows you to get a little more creative with the background technique!  On today's cards, I used my clear acrylic block to "stamp" color onto the cardstock.

Rooted In Nature Color Block - cool

Background Basics—I started by adhering a 2" x 5-1/2" piece of Wood Textures Designer Series Paper down the center of a Gray Granite card base.  I selected that cooler neutral color to coordinate well with cool blue & green tones.

Color Blocks—I inked a clean "I" block in Pool Party ink, then misted it lightly a few times with the Color Spritzer and laid it down onto a 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" piece of Whisper White card stock. For the most successful transfer of color, I keep the block there for a few seconds to make sure it's completely absorbed.  TIP: If you look down through the block, you will start to see a light colored "crackling," for lack of a better term, running underneath the block. This is the ink pulling away from the block and being fully absorbed into the paper.  Once you no longer see any of that movement, then you can pick up the block.

I repeated the same process with the "B" block in Mint Macaron ink, with a slight overlap of the first color.

After the ink had dried, I trimmed off about 1/4" off the top and bottom to make the color go off the edge of the layer.  I finished by mounting it onto a 3-5/8" x 4-1/8" piece of Early Espresso cardstock and popping it up with Dimensionals onto the front.

Color block stamping - errors

TIP 1: I found that if I cut the piece to the size I needed first, the ink would bleed into the edge of the paper, so the color block would not be straight on the ends.  You can see what I mean on the above sample at the top and bottom of the Mango Melody column of color.

TIP 2: The smaller block on the above photo also shows what it looks like if you don't get enough water spritzed onto the block.  The result is splotchy with white spots showing.

Check out my Color Block Background Video to see it in action:

After the background is done, it's time to add the stamped images!

Tree & Sentiment—I stamped both the silhouette Rooted In Nature tree and the blocked sentiment in Early Espresso ink onto scraps of Whisper White cardstock.  I die-cut the tree shape with the coordinating Nature's Roots Framelits and hand-cut the blocks of the sentiment.  All of the pieces are popped up with more Dimensionals.  TIP: You'll need to trim some of the Dimensionals down to make them fit the skinny pieces.  I like to use the edges of the Dimensionals for this purpose!

Finishing Touches—I added a few floating Rhinestone Jewels around the tree.  I left mine plain, but don't forget that you could color them to match with Stampin' Blends Markers!

Rooted In Nature Color Block - warm
Two Cool—My second card starts out with a warmer Crumb Cake card base.  I selected a different pattern of wood from the Wood Textures DSP and mounted it a little offset to the right.

Color Blocking—This time, I stamped the large block in Mango Melody and the smaller block in Poppy Parade.

The mat, tree and sentiment are all in Early Espresso, just like the first card.  The only difference is that I did a little different placement of the elements.
