Inspired by Kimberly Rorick Pottery

It was my Other Mother's birthday last week (that's my step-mom, Dawn Gerardot Putman), and I created a special birthday card to go along with her gift!  I love to coordinate my gifts and cards (and gift packaging) whenever I can!

A dawn example A Little Backstory: My O-Mom is a mixed media artist featured at the Orchard Gallery, a local, member-owned gallery in Southwest Fort Wayne.

She also has been selling some of her beautiful silk painted purses and fused glass artwork at her new Etsy shop: GerardotArtz.  The photo to the right is of Shy-Shy Charlotte, one of Dawn's painted silk & denim handbags.

The Gift Ensemble: So, Kimberly Rorick is a fellow artist at Orchard Gallery and Dawn loves her painted dishes (which are microwave and dishwasher safe).  You can see some of her work on the Fort Wayne Artists blog:  Kimberly Rorick Pottery

Dawn's gift & card    Dawn's birthday card 2011 - inside

I decided to add to Dawn's collection, and one of the pieces I chose was this colorful piece of pottery that matches the dinnerware she owns.  The little "present" is the matching card that I created to go with it!  Too Cool, if I do say so myself!

I started with the basic gift card holder idea from Vicki Webb's It's a Stamp Thing blog: Present Gift Card Holder.  I also featured a version made by Carmen DeBruce on this post

It was designed as a gift card holder, but instead of adhering the sides, I kept it open making it a tri-fold card with a Velcro closure.

Card Details: The card base is 4×8" Basic Black card stock and folded in half.  The "lid" of the gift box is 3 x 1-1/4" Basic Black card stock folded in half, then one flap is adhered to the back of the base card with Sticky Strip.

I covered the outside and inside of the present in strips of decorative paper that I had on hand. Some of the papers are retired.  The vanilla/black papers are from Love Letter DSP, the Pear Pizzazz is from the Level 1 Hostess DSP 6×6"Pack, and the Elegant Eggplant is from the Regals DSP Stack.

Making The Bow & Adding Bling: I created the bow using the 1-3/8" Small Oval Punch and 1-3/4" Large Oval Punch.  Punch with the Small Oval first, then create the oval ring by punching with the Large Oval Punch.  I off-set the oval a little, so I would have more room to attach the ovals.  You can do this with any pair of punches in the same shape.  Mary Fish recently posted a One-Minute-To-Wow on it: Circle Rings.

I used my Paper Piercer to poke holes in the fatter end of the rings, then connected all of them with a Silver Brad.  A flower punch from the Boho Blossoms Punch, added before the rings, pretties it up a bit.  You could attach the bow to the card with the brad, but I didn't want it to show through to the inside, so I adhered it with a couple Glue Dots and Dimensionals (it's not a flush back, so I needed two thicknesses of adhesive).  I added a Basic Rhinestone on the top of the Silver Brad for some bling.

I also wanted some bling on the base of the gift, so I punched 3/8" Circle Punch (from the Itty Bitty Punch Pack) from Black, raised the dots with Dimensionals, and added a Rhinestone.  I used a White Gel Pen to add some polka dots to some of the black spaces.

Bring on the cake 121958L Card Greetings:  There's not a lot of stamping on the card…I used the new Bring On The Cake set for both of the sentiments (it's a must-have set with LOTS of birthday greetings).

I colored the inside words with my brand new Watercolor Crayons and a Blender Pen.  I finally updated my crayons with the New Color Kit, so I'm able to color in shades that perfectly match my project!  Love it!

  1. I love that you matched your card with the gift! And the colors are so fun together. I usually find inspiration from magazines and also from other scrapbooking bloggers.
