Howl-O-Ween Surprise Box Card

My Demo Team created this unique make & take at our last meeting, courtesy of Michelle Hoover.

Coffin card

It looks like a typical gate-folded card, until you slip off the Basic Gray Striped Satin Ribbon…

Coffin card - slightly open

As you pull the gates apart, it becomes a 3-D box!

Coffin card - open

Pretty cool, huh?!!!

Coffin card - with gc

Although the box opens to about 1-1/2" deep, it's designed to hold thin items like a gift card, money, notecards, or other small gifts.  What a fun and surprising way to present a gift card!  And, it all fits inside a standard, Medium White (A2) Envelope!

Coffin card 3

The outside of the card is decorated with Howlstooth & Scaringbone Designer Paper and the Googly Ghouls stamp set (with one Googlies Eye, of course!).  I adhered half of the circle embellishment to one of the gates with Dimensionals.

Coffin card - inside googly

Don't forget to decorate the inside, too!  Wouldn't a scary pop-up be a fun addition to this card?  I opted for some spider webs from Wicked Cool, and the bats and "BOOOO" from Googly Ghouls, complete with more Googlies Eyes!

Make Your Own Surprise Box Card: Michelle created her projects using the instructions posted at Mickey Roberts' Paper Conversation blog.  Some people also refer to this project as a "coffin card," which is very appropriate for Halloween!  You can also find a video tutorial to create a larger, square version of this card at Frenchie Stamps: Square Surprise Box Card.

Surprise Box Card How-Tos:

Coffin box template 1

Click to enlarge this template. Cut along the green score lines, and discard the green striped sections.

Start with an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of card stock. With your Simply Scored, Diagonal Plate and/or Paper Trimmer, score and cut as follows:

  • Along the 11" side, score at 3/8", 2-1/2", 4", 7", 8-1/2", and 10-5/8" using the Simply Scored Tool.
  • Along the 8-1/2" side, score at 1-1/2" and 7" using the Simply Scored Tool.
  • Add the Diagonal Plate to the Simply Scored, then along the 11" side, score from 5-1/2" point to where the first score lines intersect.  Flip the card stock over and repeat.
  • Turn the card stock 180°, and repeat the diagonal score lines on that side.
  • Cut off the 3/8" sections along either side.
  • Cut off the corner sections.
  • Create tabs by cutting slits as shown in the template photos.
  • Fold on the score lines: mountain, valley, valley, mountain across. Fold back at the "v" score lines.

The result should look like this.

Then, simply add some Sticky Strip to the tabs and adhere them into the box shape.  TIP: I snipped a little bit off the tops of each tab so the box would line up squarely, even if I cut or scored it a bit off.
