Merry Patterns Happy Birthday Cards

I've been thoroughly enjoying the versatility of the Merry Patterns set for many different styles of holiday cards, and when you pair it with some different background papers…it can be used for birthdays, too! Too Cool! We'll be creating the first card shown below at class on Thursday.

Background Basics—It's been awhile since I used my Eastern Palace Specialty Designer Series Paper, but its bold colors makes amazing backgrounds for birthday cards! I adhered a 3-3/4" x 5" piece of the Eastern Palace DSP to a 4" x 5-1/4" piece of Dapper Denim. After adding a 3-3/4" x 1-1/2" strip of the Lemon Lime dotted pattern to the bottom half, I mounted all the layers to a Very Vanilla Thick card base.

Birthday Candles—I stamped the Merry Patterns candle outline image in Memento Black onto a Very Vanilla square die-cut with the Stitched Shapes Framelits. I also stamped a sentiment from Happy Birthday Gorgeous in Memento Black ink underneath.

Two-Stem Candle Coloring—I inked the "back" trio of candles image in Dapper Denim and the "front" candles in Lemon Lime Twist. TIP: Be sure to stand and look directly over the image as you stamp the colors for accurate alignment. The candle flames were stamped in Crushed Curry ink.

Finishing Touches—I adhered a Dapper Denim scallop square die-cut with the Layering Squares Framelits to the card front with SNAIL, then popped up the stamped layer with Dimensionals. I finished the focal point with a Lemon Lime Twist Ombré Ribbon bow, attached with a Glue Dot.

Two Cool—For my second version, I started with a different patterns from Eastern Palace DSP, this time layered onto a Tranquil Tide card stock layer.

Circle Focal Point—I changed the focal point from a square to a circle, with die-cuts created with the Stitched Shapes Framelits and Layering Circles Framelits.

Candle Details—I stepped up the candles a bit, by hand-cutting the "front" candles and popping them up with Dimensionals. If you look closely, you'll see that i also popped up the candle flames for those three candles, too! I had to cut just a tiny sliver of the Dimensionals for those flames.

Altered Ribbon—I didn't have any of the Fresh Fig 1/8" Sheer Ribbon on hand, so I made my own Fresh Fig ribbon! I colored the 1/8" Gold Ribbon with a Fresh Fig marker to alter the white color. Too Cool! I attached the bow with a Glue Dot.
