Shimmery Watercolored Birthday Blooms Cards—I love the pretty colors and patterns of the Birthday Bouquet Designer Series Papers and I haven't had a chance to play with them nearly enough this spring.  One of my favorite samples using this paper, along with the coordinating Birthday Blooms stamp set, was a card on page 8 of the 2016 Occasions Catalog!  With all the gorgeous flowers currently blooming, I thought that project would be perfect for my "Last Thursdays" class this month!

Background Basics—My card background started with a Whisper White card base with the 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" front completely covered by the Birthday Bouquet DSP.  TIP: If you want to use the DSP more efficiently, you could simply adhere 1" x 4-1/4" strips to each side of the card.

Shimmery Foundation—I stamped the large Birthday Blooms flowers in Archival Black Ink onto a 3-3/4" x 4-1/4" piece of Shimmery White card stock.  I love the soft shimmer that peeks through when watercoloring on this card stock.

Shimmery White Card Stock is Great For Watercoloring!  It's much more durable than regular card stock, so the colors blend together easily without the paper pilling so quickly.  I also like it a little better than watercolor paper because the smooth surface allows the inks to float on the surface to blend more smoothly without using as much water.

Watercoloring—I used an Aqua Painter dipped in the ink from the lid of my Classic Ink Pads to watercolor the Birthday Blooms flowers.  Work from light to dark colors for the shading.

Here's how I completed the focal point:

  • Color the flower center with Delightful Dijon.
  • Paint a layer of Blushing Bride ink over all the flowers.
  • Add Calypso Coral shading to the insides and undersides of the flower petals and buds.
  • Paint a layer of Pear Pizzazz over all of the leaves.
  • Add Mossy Meadow shading to the insides of the large leaves.
  • Stamp two small flowers in Mint Macaron ink.
  • Stamp the dots image in Delightful Dijon 5-6 times all around the bouquet.

Sweet Sentiment—I stamped the Birthday Blooms greeting at the top with Archival Black Ink, then popped up the colored layer with Dimensionals onto the card front.

Two Cool—For my second version, I tried the pretty watercolor striped Birthday Bouquet DSP and a vertical orientation.

Watercolor VariationI added more of the darker Calypso Coral and Mossy Meadow shading to this image to really make it pop against the lighter background.  I also stamped the small flowers in Pool Party this time.
