A couple weeks ago, I had lots of fun with the Owl Punch when I created an awesome pop-up card for my niece, Maggie, who was turning 8. She loves owls, and even has an Owl Punch of her own!
I found a fanastic design on DarleneDesign.com of the cutest owl birthday party and I knew it was perfect!
Here is the front of the card…not much happening here, but it points the way to the party using the arrow from the Party This Way stamp set. The background paper is the pretty, glossified (what? it's a word) Sweet & Sour Designer Series Paper. I added a Scallop Edge Border to the inside that peeks through to the front—love it!
But, now for the fun! Open up the card, and…
Surprise! There's a pop-up party going on! And, look closely (click to enlarge). Every attendee, including the lion and penguin, are made from the Owl Punch! Too Cool!
Peggy Penguin is made by cutting off the owl ears for a more narrow, rounded head.
Lance Lion's head is the owl punch with the feet cut off, and his body is another owl punch with Boho Blossom petals for the feet. The Scallop Circle punch creates his mane and his long, skinny tail is made from the branch in the Bird Punch.
The Snow Owl, his name is Sebastian, uses the small flowers in the Boho Blossom Punch for fluffy eyes, and the wings from the Bird Punch.
Maggie Owl is dressed in Sweet & Sour DSP and has the biggest birthday hat (well, it IS her birthday!). Actually, I made the other hats smaller so that they didn't stick out of the card when I closed it. Each one has a Rhinestone on top.
The background stamps, including the birthday cake, which sparkles with Dazzling Diamonds, comes from the Party This Way stamp set.
Pop-Up How-Tos
You can find a video tutorial of the tiered pop-up owl party on Darlene Design's blog. It's a lot easier than it may appear—just several slits cut in the correct places on a folded piece of card stock. Check it out!
Unfortunately, even though Maggie's birthday was at the first of the month, she hasn't even seen her awesome card yet! Sssshhh! Don't show her! Her party was postponed because she was sick (that's not a very nice birthday present), and then I couldn't attend the rescheduled event because I had a stamping workshop. Hopefully, I can get it to her soon—I just couldn't wait any longer to show you!
Oh, and I mentioned that she has her own Owl Punch now. Look at the card I received for my birthday…
It's another owl party, and each one of these owls is popped up with accordian-folded card stock! I'm not sure if she made this card by herself, or if her siblings helped out, but I absolutely LOVE it!
