Many Mittens Penguins Gift Card Holders
O.M.Goodness! I wasn't going to get the Smitten Mitten bundle, but I recently saw a post by Donna Griffith from the Stampin' Up! corporate team sharing how to create these adorable penguins with the Many Mittens Framelits! Suddenly, I had to buy it! Maybe some of you can relate?! I couldn't wait to make some cute little penguins of my own! I added my penguins to the front of a quick & easy gift card holder.
Gift Card Holder Basics—The base of this gift card holder begins with a 4-1/4" x 9" piece of either Bermuda Bay or Soft Sky card stock, scored along the 9" side at 3", 4-1/2" and 6". Fold on the score lines like an accordion, making a "W". To create the center popup gift card pocket, I used Tear & Tape on the short outer edges, and bottom of the pocket to seal it closed. Careful: Do NOT add adhesive near the center fold, which eventually becomes the top of the pocket!
I used the Everyday Label Punch to punch out a slot on the top fold of the pocket, but you could also use the Classic Label Punch. I started with a punch on one end, leaving about a 1/4", then slid the punch down toward the other end, leaving another 1/4" on the other side. It's just enough room in the slit opening for a gift card to fit! I love this easy & fun pop up style holder!
Inside Message Area—I added a 2-3/4" x 4" piece of Whisper White for the message area, stamping it with some images from the Smitten Mitten set in Pool Party ink.
Cover Background—I stamped the Smitten Mittens snowflake image all over the front cover in Bermuda Bay on this version. Then, I stamped a sentiment from Oh What Fun in Memento Black ink onto a 3" x 2" Whisper White piece. I tore the top off of the piece to simulate the snowy ground, then adhered it with SNAIL The greeting is accented with a couple of Rhinestone Jewels. I finished by adhering an 18" piece of Bermuda Bay Mini Chevron Ribbon on the front of the holder with a strip of Tear & Tape and tying it into a bow around the holder.
Pretty Penguin Punch Art—I die-cut two black mittens with the Many Mittens Framelits; one each of the right- and left-hand mittens. I adhered the two die-cuts together, with the bottom "body" offset about 1/8" to allow the black to show once the white mitten body is added. I die-cut the white mitten, then cut off the thumb to make the penguin chest. All of the tops of the mittens should be flush together…it's just the bottoms of the black mittens fanned out a bit to make the black border.
Here are the other penguin parts:
- Feet—Die-cut one of the Many Mittens poinsettia flower dies with Pumpkin Pie card stock, then cut in half and use three of the points to create the penguin feet.
- Nose—Punch a Pumpkin Pie bow tie with the Cookie Cutter Builder Punch and trim one side to make the nose.
- Eyes—The two Basic Black eyes are also punched with the Cookie Cutter Builder Punch.
Once the penguin was assembled, I popped him up with Dimensionals over the ribbon.
Winter Hat—The Real Red hat is die-cut with the Many Mittens die, too, then cut off around the thumb to create the cap. I cut a 1-3/8" x 1/2" piece of Real Red card stock, then embossed it with one of the texture embosslits from the same die set to make the brim of the hat. I frayed a tiny strip of silver Tinsel Trim and adhered it underneath the hat to create a shiny tassel on the top. The Silver Glimmer snowflake is cut with the Swirly Snowflakes Thinlits. It's attached with a Glue Dot, then adorned with a Rhinestone Jewel. Absolutely the cutest!!!
Two Cool—I did a second version with Soft Sky as the gift card holder base and tied with a Soft Sky Classic Weave Ribbon. I stamped the background using Pool Party ink and made the hat from Pool Party card stock for some contrasting blue against the Soft Sky. Everything else is the same. I'm so happy I broke down and ordered this set! I LOVE these little guys so much!
P.S.—Speaking of little guys, there are tiny mittens dies in the Many Mittens Framelits, so you can make Mini Penguins, too! I can't wait to create a whole ding-dang penguin family!
