Hi Stamping Friends!
Today, I'm sharing another one of the background techniques that we'll be trying at my Stamper Sampler Too Cool Backgrounds class!
CASEd from Paula Dobson at Stampinantics..
Amazing Birthday With 3D Masking
For today's projects, I used the Happy Patterns Decorative Masks to lay down two cool layers of color that look 3D when combined! The backgrounds were so pretty that I hated to cover them up!
Background Basics—I started with a 3-3/4" x 5" piece of Soft Sky card stock for the masked layer. That was eventually mounted on a 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" piece of Early Espresso and adhered to a Crumb Cake card base.
3D Masked Background Prep—Start by temporarily tacking your card stock to your work surface with some Dotto, or a couple of tiny dabs of SNAIL. Next, you'll lay your favorite Happy Patterns Decorative Mask over the top and secure it into position with some washi tape at the top.
Sponging Layer #1—Once everything is secured, it's time to apply the same color ink as the card stock. For best results, use a Sponge Dauber to pounce the color into the holes of the mask. Do not rub the dauber across the mask or it will chew up your sponge tip. Pouncing works best!
Lift up the bottom of the mask to make sure you achieved the coverage you desire. When you're done, remove the mask and clean off the ink by either running it under tap water or using a baby wipe. Make sure it's fully dry before moving onto the second layer of color.
Sponging Layer #2—Next, you'll re-position your mask over the same spot, then nudge it over just the teeniest bit to one side. You could also make it go a smidge up or down for even more of a 3D effect. After securing the mask in place with some washi tape once again, use a different Sponge Dauber to apply White Craft Ink through the holes.
TIP #1: Make sure your ink pad is re-inked and juicy! You need to force lots of the Craft Ink through the hole to give it that opaque white look. Carefully lift the bottom of the mask to check the coverage and add more ink if some spots are not white enough.
TIP #2: The White Craft Ink takes a little while to dry. To avoid smudging & smearing, allow it to completely dry or hurry the drying process along with a Heat Gun.
TIP #3: Be sure to clean the White Craft Ink off of your mask right away. I ran mine under water and wiped it with a soft cloth.
Background Layers—I adhered a 3-3/4" x 3/4" strip of Early Espresso card stock across the center of the card, then adhered a 4" piece of Burlap underneath it, trimming the ends flush with the edges of the Early Espresso layer.
Amazing Banner—I stamped the Amazing Birthday banner image three times onto Whisper White card stock: once each in Soft Sky, Crumb Cake & Early Espresso. I cut the full Crumb Cake banner out by hand with Paper Snips to act as the base. Then, I cut parts of the other banner colors to "paper piece" onto the original banner. The oval and "amazing" word were popped up with Dimensionals, and the entire banner was popped up with more Dimensionals.
Amazing Accents—To finish the card, I attached a Gold Metal Button with a couple Glue Dots. The bow was created with one strand from the Burlap trim, and attached with a Glue Dot on top of the button.

Two Cool—For my second version, I tried out the Happy Patterns dots & lines mask, and I applied the layers in a different order for a slightly different look.
Switching Sponging Layers—This time, I started with the White Craft Ink for the first layer. After setting it aside and letting it dry thoroughly, I went back and added the second layer in Soft Sky ink. I really love the results doing it this way! You actually get three layers of color—white, light blue, darker blue—for a more dimensional look! Too Cool!
Sweet Sentiment Banner—This time, I paper pieced the top section with the Soft Sky banner, so the next section of words would be easier to read in Crumb Cake.
Finishing Touches—I swapped the two background layers and changed to smaller Gold Metal Button, but otherwise it's the same.
Complete Supplies List—"Clear mount" is a rubber stamp to be used on a clear acrylic block, "Photopolymer" is the see-thru style of stamps, also used with acrylic blocks.
