Hi Stamping Friends!

We are finally warming up a bit here in Fort Wayne, IN—today & tomorrow it's gonna be in the 50s!  Woohoo!  It's all gonna be short-lived, since they're predicting 4-6" of snow on Wednesday.  Oh well!  I've been loving all of the snow this Winter, but I have to admit, I'm ready for Spring!

I must have been thinking Spring when I was creating the projects for this Friday's Wow Techniques Class—it's all flowers, flowers, flowers!

March wow - three coolWow Techniques Class—Friday, March 14

You're invited to join us Friday, March 14, at 6:30pm in my Too Cool Stamping Studio as we create 3 Spring-themed projects!  Cost is $15 or the class is FREE with a minimum qualifying order* placed at the event.  Here's what we'll be making:

  • Simple Stems Simply Scored Card—Create a colorful stacked flower on a beautifully textured background, hand-embossed with the Simply Scored Scoring Tool.  See below for details!
  • Blossoms Bouquet Card In A Box—Talk about fabulous!  This card explodes into a box full of blooms, yet folds down to fit easily into a standard-sized envelope!  Wow, indeed!
  • Happy Watercolor Bookmark Card—A card & gift in one!  We'll use the new Perforated Rotary Tool to make a detachable bookmark inside a pretty card with gold accents!

As always, projects can be customized with different sentiments to fit a variety of special occasions: birthdays, Mother's Day, wedding, thank you, etc.

*Minimum order is $25.  Other workshop, class, private class or club orders do not qualify.

Wanna Join Us?  Please RSVP By Thursday, March 13 at 5pm!

Non-Local Stampers—Sorry, there are no Class-To-Go Kits for this class. We are using way too many special tools and stamp sets, so it just doesn't make sense. I'll provide project details in upcoming blog posts to help you create the projects on your own.

Simply scored background - two cool

Our first Wow Techniques Class project for March is a quick & fun technique for creating elegant textured backgrounds.  The photographs above are a bit deceptive, because you can't quite make out the gorgeous embossed patterns underneath the colorful elements.  Let's take a closer look!

Simply scored background - single

Can you see it better now? There's a stunning striped pattern below a lovely curved embossed line.  So pretty and subtle! It reminds me of wallpaper in a Victorian-style house.

Elegant Embossing—It's easy to do! I used one of the embossing folders from Adorning Accents and positioned it at an angle across the 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" piece of Whisper White card stock, and ran it through the Big Shot.  Then, I used my Simply Scored Tool to manually add in the striped lines at every 1/8".

TIPS: I found that for the cleanest look, start off the edge of the card stock and score toward the Adorning Accents curved line.  You should stop your scoring just before you reach the curved line. If you intersect the line, it creates an undesirable (at least to me) overlap on the other side. I liked the curved line to look continual and not interrupted.

Simple Stems Stacked Flower—For my focal point, I stamped the large blossom from Simple Stems three times, once each in Bermuda Bay, Night of Navy and Wisteria Wonder.  The full flower can be die-cut with the Secret Garden Framelits—yay!  The smaller tiers are hand-cut and popped up with Dimensionals.  I used three of the tiny Pearl Jewels to accent the center.

Banner Sentiment—The Wisteria Wonder sentiment from the Hostess Set called Banner Greetings was just the look I wanted for this card.  I love this set of versatile greetings, all in the same, easy-to-cut-out shape!  This set will be gone when we get the new catalog in June, so don't miss out!

I added a trio of the larger Pearl Jewels to complete the focal point.

Finishing Touches—I embossed a 3-7/8" x 1/2" piece of Wistera Wonder with the Needlepoint Border Embossing Folder to create a nice finish at the bottom of the card.

Ribbon & Bow—After mounting the embossed card front onto a 4" x 5-1/4" Night of Navy mat, I wrapped a piece of Bermuda Bay 1/8" Taffeta Ribbon around the bottom and secured the ends around the back. The bow is tied separately and adhered on top with a Glue Dot.  The whole thing was then mounted on a Wistera Wonder card base.

All of the same elements were used for this horizontal version.

Alternative Embossing Ideas—There are so many ways that you could change up the hand-scored details.  I tried them 1/4" apart on this card, but you could experiment with a variety of patterns:

  • Alternate the widths of the stripes.
  • Use the Diagonal Plate for angled stripes.
  • Add additional stripes at 90° to create a checked pattern.
  • Create diamond shapes by alternating the Diagonal Plate.
  • Create a dotted or random-lined look by only scoring parts of the lines.
